Cannabis cannabinoids: THC and CBD

Get to know the two main cannabinoids: THC and CBD

Highlights:

  • THC and CBD are the most common naturally occurring cannabinoids in cannabis plants.
  • While both THC and CBD are psychoactive, potentially altering perception, mood, consciousness, cognition, or behavior, only THC is thought of as intoxicating.
  • THC and CBD react in different ways with the receptors that are part of our internal endocannabinoid system.

Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD) are cannabinoids, which are the naturally occurring compounds found in the cannabis plant. These are the chemicals that act on the cannabinoid receptors (CB1 and CB2) in our brain and body that are part of our endocannabinoid system and may trigger a host of effects and feelings, ranging from euphoria to relaxation.

While there are more than 120 known cannabinoids, the most abundant in cannabis are THC and CBD. Not all cannabinoids are psychoactive.

The percentage of each cannabinoid varies by strain, creating an infinite number of subjective experiences, especially because cannabis can affect people in a variety of different ways.

What is THC?

THC is the abbreviation for tetrahydrocannabinol, the most common and well-known cannabinoid in cannabis. In nature, tetrahydrocannabinolic acid (THCA), the precursor to THC, is thought to help defend the plant against predators and parasites. In humans, THC is known for providing the “high”, or intoxicating effects from cannabis, which is why starting with a low amount for any new product is essential. Percentages of THC in cannabis strains range from very low to upwards of 25 percent. Generally speaking, the higher the percentage, the more intense the effects may be.

What is CBD?

CBD, also known as cannabidiol, is the second most common cannabinoid found in cannabis after THC. Although CBD is still considered psychoactive, it is not thought of as intoxicating, meaning it does not deliver a euphoric feeling unless in the company of THC. CBD is generally found in very low percentages in some strains, but its effects are more pronounced when that percentage is above four percent. With no known harmful side effects, high-CBD strains of cannabis are becoming increasingly popular for those seeking relief without the feeling of euphoria.

THC and CBD can also be extracted from dried cannabis flowers for use in oils and capsules. Visit our Cannabis store page to search products based on THC and CBD content.
